Portable Gas Detector Calibration Services

We offer calibration and certification services for most models of portable Gas Detectors from leading brands.

A calibration is simply applying a known concentration of gas to sensors that these sensors can detect.

Why to calibrate?

Gas detectors sensors need to be calibrated and periodically checked to ensure sensor accuracy. Sensors can drift causing inaccuracies in the reading or they may not be working due to aging or drying of the sensors, mechanical damage due to dropping or immersion in liquid. This means that the instrument must be maintained and calibrated according to manufacturer guidelines.

How often to calibrate?

Regular calibration guards against any unexpected loss of sensitivity of the sensor. The intervals between calibration can be different depending on the detector, sensor and environment they are being used in. The manufacturer of the gas detector will recommend a time interval between calibration, usually every 180 days/6 months. In the 180 days/6 months we must check the sensors to make sure that the sensors can still detect the gases that they are designed the detect and this is done through a bump test.

Calibration Procedures

Calibration is usually a two-step procedure. In the first step, the instrument is taken to a fresh air environment and "zeroed" so the readings equal those expected in clean air: 20.9 percent for oxygen, 0 percent LEL for combustible gas, and 0 ppm for toxic gas. The second step is to expose the instrument to calibration gas that contains known concentrations of the gases the sensors are designed to measure. The readings are then adjusted to match these values. Only competent persons should calibrate a gas detector and should be done in accordance with the manufacture’s guidelines.
